Kate Briggs is a writer, translator, editor and publisher. Her translations include works by Michel Foucault, Roland Barthes and, more recently, two novellas by Hélène Bessette, who in 1956 founded the “Gang of the Poetic Novel”: Lili is Crying (2025) and Twenty Minutes of Silence (2026). She is the author of The Long Form, a novel (2023), This Little Art, an essay on the practice of translation (2017), Entertaining Ideas, an essay on reading and hospitality (2018) and I Am Not Ready, a pamphlet of poems (2026). Her books have been translated into French, Spanish, German, Korean and Turkish. In 2021, she was awarded a Windham-Campbell prize for non-fiction. In 2023, with artists Ash Kilmartin, Annabelle Binnerts and Linus Bonduelle, she co-founded the micro-press Short Pieces that Move! publishing pamphlets by Rotterdam-based or linked artists and writers. In 2022, she was a judge for the Republic of Consciousness Prize, celebrating small-press publishing; in 2026, she is one of the judges for the Goldsmiths Prize, celebrating innovation in the novel.
