David Haines awarded the Refresh Irinox Prize at Artissima 2017

We are excited to share that MMDC Lens-Based tutor David Haines was awarded the first edition of the Refresh Irinox Prize for his work presented by Upstream Gallery at the Disegni section of Artissima 2017.

David brings his perspective as a fine artist deeply engaged with thinking through the relationship between traditional and contemporary media to his teaching at the PZI Media Design Lens-Based path.

And, indeed, the work awarded in Artissima was singled out for bringing a fresh perspective on the ways we use media into the discipline of drawing. About his work, Claire Gilman (curator, The Drawing Center, New York) noted during the award ceremony:

“David’s work stands out at speaking to issues at the forefront of drawing today. The way in which he uses the medium to play with representation, both in terms of the hand made and the digital, as well as his deep investment in art historical references, is exemplary within a proliferation of work in this area. His work gives poignant testament to our contemporary condition in which our desire for intimacy and human contact is filtered through the solitude of the screen”.

The jury of the Refresh Irinox Prize was headed by: Claire Gilman(curator, The Drawing Center, New York), Katharine Stout (deputy director, ICA, London) and Irina Zucca Alessandrelli (curator, Ramo Collection, Milano).
