Kairos Time features twelve international artists based in Rotterdam whose works deploy a multiplicity of poetics and reflect diverse approaches to artistic practice today. The title refers to a possible common ground between the artists and the works, which may or may not be located in the spatio-temporal, social and political contexts from which they have emerged. Along with Kronos, Kairos is an ancient Greek word for time, but while the former refers to chronological, sequential time, the latter alludes to the right or opportune moment when action must be taken, chances seized or conversely lost, inevitably affecting the course of things. Kairos represents a time lapse, an indeterminate moment when anything can happen and opportunities can be grasped, if and when they are perceived at all. Kairos Time is here understood as a space of potential, found in the daily situations or circumstances that an artist must assess and work with or against.

If we view an art practice as a series of seized favorable moments, it is worth asking: how much opportunism does it take to be an artist today? In A Grammar of the Multitude (2004), the Italian philosopher Paolo Virno analyzes post-Fordist conditions of labor and describes opportunists as “those who confront a flow of ever-interchangeable possibilities, making themselves available to the greater number of these, yielding to the nearest one, and then quickly swerving from one to another.” By depriving the term of its negative connotation Virno invents an extremely up to date rhetoric around the contemporary worker, which recalls the traits of openness, flexibility, and the unbiased attitude that are often associated with the figure of the artist.

Ranging from video to installation the works in Kairos time reflect the artist’s specific capacities to transform circumstances into meaningful visual systems, to turn specific material limits and restrictions into open-ended speculative journeys, and suggest that the opportune moment is a condition of the mind rather than a logically determined and immediately graspable point in time.

In collaboration with the Master of Fine Art Program of the Piet Zwart Institute, the post-graduate studies & research institute of the Willem de Kooning Academy.

Screening Thursday July 10, 8pm

The Fertile Nexus is a presentation of video works selected by Graham Kelly in dialogue with his work in the exhibition, Kairos Time, at Tent in Rotterdam. The screening will investigate the mutation of a now fluid moving image, following its migration from a controlled cinema context to its embedment within the external environment. It sets out to question the hybridisation of both the viewer and the image in their newly shared habitat: a transitional state from which one can look into the other and the other back into one.

The Piet Zwart Institute is pleased to announce this year’s graduation exhibition, FABRICATION OF ATMOSPHERE, presenting projects by international designers from the Master of Interior Architecture & Retail Design [MIARD] programme.

MIARD’s graduation show focuses on the FABRICATION OF ATMOSPHERE. The works presented examine the potential of the spatial character of atmosphere and refer to the fabrication of atmosphere through components of the interior. How can we inquire and reveal the conditions and interferences of atmosphere? And how can we, according to Silvia Benedeto “understand interior space through an atmospheric lens” [1]? If we consider atmosphere a strategic tool to re-structure spatial thinking and formulations through its immaterial features and transient qualities, [2] what then, are the possibilities and limits of fabricating atmospheres in regard to interior architecture?

UNLINKED (dislocations, disappearances and deprecations)

This year’s graduation show of the Piet Zwart Institute’s Master of Media Design & Communication: Networked & Lens-Based perhaps reflects a shift in popular culture. Whereas no self-respecting media self-help book or newspaper article published in the last decade missed using ‘linked’ or ‘stay connected’ in the text several times, a more recent rash of articles and runaway best-sellers feature words such as ‘introvert’ or ‘silence’. Have we reached a consensual moment where we might all agree it has become urgently necessary to critically look at how the words ‘social’ and ‘media’ might be used together? Is it becoming increasingly pressing to explore how contemporary media forms pervasive networks of both communication and mis-communication? To look at how media can foster community yet also create isolation and foster loneliness?

Each project reflects a unique research trajectory over two years: each artist has developed a unique media language through which they have researched particular topics and then – through a cycle of studio-based practice and critical reflection – have created the artworks and research projects you will find in this show: works about dislocation, disappearance & deprecation.

Within the diverse work on show, a certain engagement with landscape can be identified: landscapes with specific histories and landscapes abstracted into images of the sublime, recorded landscapes, and utterly synthetic landscapes. But all viewed through the eye of a lens either physical or virtual.  It is from this tendency that the title of the show is derived…

The participating students are: Chris Baronavski (USA), Femke de Bruijn (NL), Marleen Leuverink (NL), Vincenzo Onnembo (IT), Tanja Deman (CR), Tiddo Roozendaal (NL), Zafer Topaloglu (TR), Yuko Uesu (JP) and Roeland Veraart (NL).

Curated by Mai Abu ElDahab

From 9 July to 22 August, TENT. presents 'If you say something, see something', the graduation show of the PZI Master Fine Art. Twelve artists from various countries present new installations, photographs, videos and performances. The exhibition is curated by Mai Abu ElDahab in collaboration with artist Guy Ben-Ner. The title of the exhibition, 'If you say something, see something', is taken from the title of a poem by Charles Bernstein. Like this word play, it skews the habitual hierarchy of form and content.

Mai Abu ElDahab is director of the art space Objectif Exhibitions (Antwerp, BE) and was invited as guest curator for the final presentation. For the past six months, she has been working together with the twelve participating artists on the basis of a brief informed by the students' interests and written by artist Ben-Ner on her request.

Presentation of Promotieprijs 2010

Before the opening, the Promotieprijs 2010 will be awarded to one of the graduates. The Promotieprijs is an initiative by Stichting Promotieprijs. The jury for the Promotieprijs 2010 consists of: chairman Hugo Bongers (secretary Rotterdamse Raad voor Kunst en Cultuur), David Baars (architect), Elizabeth Kleinveld (artist, director Artstart). Last year's Promotieprijs was awarded to Rachel Carey (US).

Publication

The exhibition is accompanied by a publication edited by Mai Abu ElDahab and the artists. Design: Kaisa Lassinaro. The publication is available from the reception desk at TENT. for € 4.

From July 3 until July 12, Willem de Kooning Academie (WdKA) will exhibit the best work of the eight graduates of the Master Media Design and Communication: Networked Media as part of her graduation festival 'FIRST VIEW'. This year we’ve chosen for the Centrum Beeldende Kunst [CBK or Centre of Visual Art; MA], a unique location along the Nieuwe Binnenweg in the centre of Rotterdam.

The large open space of this 'art counter' will feature work from graduates Alexandre Leray (FR), Dennis de Bel (NL), Leonie Urff (NL), Marc Xiang Rong Chia (SG), Sauli Warmenhoven (FI/NL), Serena Williams (NL/USA), Stéphanie Vilayphiou and Timo Klok (NL) of the Master Media Design & Communication: Networked Media (School of Media & Design). Besides this, you can enjoy work from our first year master students, which they made for ‘Build, Break and Broadcast’, a project on do-it-yourself hacking and recycling of electronic hardware. Finally, you can visit workshops and talks by artists, designers and media activists.

Make sure you get yourself a copy of our catalogue “Huh? Oops… F*ck! Oh, no! Wait…Again”, which contains an essay of Arie Altena and all work on display.

Since it was founded in 2002, the Master Media Design has been based on the idea of designing (and redesigning) media rather than just designing with them, and on a critical practice of arts, media and communication within their social context. Our students are international designers, artists and media activists with diverse study backgrounds in art, music, audiovisual production, architecture and even philosophy and social sciences.

A couple of hours before the exhibition, at 15.30 to be precise, the Master graduates receive their diploma at WdKA, location Karel Doormanhof.

Drs. Richard E. Ouwerkerk, Dean | Executive Director WdKA, will open the exhibition on Friday July 3 2009 at 20.30 hrs. Guest speakers Florian Cramer, lector Communication in a Digital Age and course director richting Media Design and Communication (WdKA), and Sergei Versteeg, Managing Director Centre of Visual Art will then address visitors. The exhibition hall opens at 20.00 hrs.
