Opening Event: JUNE 8TH, 5-7.30PM

Exhibition dates: 8 JUN – 29 JUN 2019

Location: Upstream Gallery, Kloveniersburgwal 95 , 1011 KB Amsterdam

Upstream Gallery presents a series of short exhibitions by young and upcoming artists in the Private Viewing Space. In conjunction with openings in our main gallery, we open momentary presentations of young artists in this 17th century room.

Upstream Gallery proudly presents See the light, the first solo presentation by Fabian Landewee. In this body of work, the artist visually explores concepts of seeing, looking, perception and visibility. Turning his lens onto the places where images are produced, he aims to deconstruct the idea of photography. Landewee takes the viewer behind the scenes of image-making, showing us photographers capturing the runway during fashion week; the LEDs that illuminate Rio de Janeiro’s famous statue of Christ the Redeemer or the eye testing equipment at an optician’s exam room. The relation between desire and the photographic medium is a recurring theme.

Following his increasing interest in the physical nature of photographs as objects, Landewee started to integrate sculpture in his practice. In Headlight, the industrial finish of the seductive object – a pars pro toto for a car as a highly desirable commodity – contrasts starkly with the earthly, unfired clay, in which the artist’s fingerprints are still visible. The sculpture results from a further investigation into themes that were already present in Landewee’s earlier works in photography, such as reflection, material desire, illumination, object fetishism and the photographic body.

Fabian Landewee is a visual artist based in Amsterdam. He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts, Maastricht and recently received a master of arts degree in Media Design (Lens-based media) at the Piet Zwart Institute, Rotterdam. His practice focuses on the image as object and photographic production. Landewee works with a comprehensive archive of images. Disregarding any hierarchy between new, older and found images, he creates new constellations through association. In these new contexts, visual fragments acquire a new meaning.

Twelve artists from various countries present new installations, photographs, videos and performances. The exhibition is curated by Mai Abu ElDahab in collaboration with artist Guy Ben-Ner. The title of the exhibition, 'If you say something, see something', is taken from the title of a poem by Charles Bernstein. Like this word play, it skews the habitual hierarchy of form and content.

Mai Abu ElDahab is director of the art space Objectif Exhibitions (Antwerp, BE) and was invited as guest curator for the final presentation. For the past six months, she has been working together with the twelve participating artists on the basis of a brief informed by the students' interests and written by artist Ben-Ner on her request.

Before the opening, the Promotieprijs 2010 will be awarded to one of the graduates. The Promotieprijs is an initiative by Stichting Promotieprijs. The jury for the Promotieprijs 2010 consists of: chairman Hugo Bongers (secretary Rotterdamse Raad voor Kunst en Cultuur), David Baars (architect), Elizabeth Kleinveld (artist, director Artstart). Last year's Promotieprijs was awarded to Rachel Carey (US).

Between January and June 2010, visitors of Witte de With – Rotterdam's internationally renown center for contemporary art – will encounter a playful and empowering communication device. 'Expo[re]view' by PZI alumna Leonie Urff, originally developed as her 2009 graduation project for the Master Media Design/Networked Media.

Expo[re]view allows people to record their own personal experience and stories about art work in an exhibition with an oversize tie bearing a small video camera. The results are collected in a visitor-made 'video catalogue' on Witte de With's website for the Morality project. This project, an ongoing debate about art and morality, takes place from October 9 2009 until July 31 2010.

For more information and the results, visit Witte de With or its website.

From July 3 until July 12, Willem de Kooning Academie (WdKA) will exhibit the best work of the eight graduates of the Master Media Design and Communication: Networked Media as part of her graduation festival 'FIRST VIEW'. This year we’ve chosen for the Centrum Beeldende Kunst [CBK or Centre of Visual Art; MA], a unique location along the Nieuwe Binnenweg in the centre of Rotterdam.

The large open space of this 'art counter' will feature work from graduates Alexandre Leray (FR), Dennis de Bel (NL), Leonie Urff (NL), Marc Xiang Rong Chia (SG), Sauli Warmenhoven (FI/NL), Serena Williams (NL/USA), Stéphanie Vilayphiou and Timo Klok (NL) of the Master Media Design & Communication: Networked Media (School of Media & Design). Besides this, you can enjoy work from our first year master students, which they made for ‘Build, Break and Broadcast’, a project on do-it-yourself hacking and recycling of electronic hardware. Finally, you can visit workshops and talks by artists, designers and media activists.

Make sure you get yourself a copy of our catalogue “Huh? Oops… F*ck! Oh, no! Wait…Again”, which contains an essay of Arie Altena and all work on display.

Since it was founded in 2002, the Master Media Design has been based on the idea of designing (and redesigning) media rather than just designing with them, and on a critical practice of arts, media and communication within their social context. Our students are international designers, artists and media activists with diverse study backgrounds in art, music, audiovisual production, architecture and even philosophy and social sciences.

A couple of hours before the exhibition, at 15.30 to be precise, the Master graduates receive their diploma at WdKA, location Karel Doormanhof.

Drs. Richard E. Ouwerkerk, Dean | Executive Director WdKA, will open the exhibition on Friday July 3 2009 at 20.30 hrs. Guest speakers Florian Cramer, lector Communication in a Digital Age and course director richting Media Design and Communication (WdKA), and Sergei Versteeg, Managing Director Centre of Visual Art will then address visitors. The exhibition hall opens at 20.00 hrs.

Willem de Kooning Academy alumni from all courses often attract attention and praise for their professional achievements. In quite some cases right after graduation, but long afterwards as well. King of them all is alumnus Willem de Kooning (1904-1997): at present paintings that he did as an octogenarian are on show in New York.

With due pride, WdKA tries to keep track of her alumni, e.g. through the 'Alumni Projects'-section of this site. WdKA offers her alumni the opportunity to have special achievements and projects published on this site – please take up contact with us.

Apart from that, in its Academy Gallery BLAAK10 WdKA frequently presents projects by its alumni. Thus, through October 28 2007 BLAAK10 is showing 'Watching the River Flow: murals by Sonia Rijnhout, Gracia Khouw and Jasper van der Graaf' – all three of them alumni of Fine Art. 16 November will see the opening of an exhibition on Raoul de Leeuw a.k.a. 'deleo', a 1993 graduate at WdKA's BA Illustration. Presently, WdKA staff is programming a special 'Alumni Day', scheduled for May 2008. We'll keep you posted through this site.

Projects by our alumni are presented elsewhere as well. Paul van der Eerden (Fine Art, 1979) is the guest curator of the 'Enclosures' exhibition at Rotterdam's Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen. Otto Egberts (Fine Art, 1982) is showing a retrospective of his drawings at the Stedelijk Museum in Schiedam. Film maker Nanouk Leopold (Fine Art, 1992) has produced her third feature movie, 'Wolfsbergen' – as remarkable as the two previous ones. Two very new artists, Wendy Bos and Matrijs van Merg (Fine Art, 2007) are having a show at Rotterdam's berendsen, gallery for contemporary art.

Our alumni of the School of Media & Design quite frequently hit the spot light as well. Recently an extensive interview was published with Susan Bijl (who in 2000 refrained from graduating from WdKA's BA Audiovisual Design) on account of her internationally successful 'New Shoppingbag'. Earlier this summer, the fashion collections by Nada van Dalen, Daisy Kroon and Niels Brinkman (Fashion Design, 2007) were presented on a catwalk on Amsterdam's Museumplein.

Are you, too, a WdKA alumnus, and do you want to (re-)establish contact in order to get posted on our alumni activities? Please notify us digitally by the form elsewhere on this site.
