Open Day WdKA/PZI Master Design

>Wednesday 18 November, 19.00-20.30 pm / Zoom

Based on their own design question, students within the Master Design learn to do design and in-depth design research. They constantly reflect on what they discover and convey their work and expertise through storytelling. They combine and integrate this part-time master with their design practice, renew their own role and in this way that of creative professionals in society and organizations. They contribute to social, environmental and technological change. The combination of participatory work and authorship is fundamental.

Join us in the Open Day to find out more on our course, in a program where the course director, a tutor and two students share their insights and answer questions.

Subscribe before Friday 13th November via the email: wdka.masterdesign@hr.nl and tell us your name, background (discipline) and what you expect from our master (short text).

The Life of an Artist A symposium curated by Lili Reynaud-Dewar in collaboration with Piet Zwart Institute's Master of Fine Art and Geneva University of Art and Design's work.master, held during Piet Zwart Institute's Open House.

With lectures and performances by: Jim Colquhoun, Maria Fusco, Karl Holmqvist, Elisabeth Lebovici, Pierre Leguillon, Avigail Moss

and: Giles Bailey, Lars Brekke, Jane Fawcett, Serena Lee, Kirsty Roberts, Deniz Unal, Camilla Wills, Miho Shimizu, Sabrina Soyez

and screenings of work by:Michel Auder, Jay Street Film Project, Renato de Maria, Frances Stark, Barbara Visser among others.

In Nadja Breton recalls an anecdote concerning Victor Hugo and a pair of gates, a large gate and a small gate at the entrance to an estate: this double threshold was passed daily by Hugo and his companion Juliette Drouet. What follows is a description of the routine of remarks exchanged between the couple in reference to these gates. Repeated by them for perhaps the thousandth time as ritual. How does, why does – Breton muses – this anecdote (petty event of everyday life) allow him, Breton, an incomparable awareness and access into sensing what Hugo was, what he is. “As far as I am concerned, a mind's arrangement with regards to certain objects is even more important than its regard for certain arrangements of objects.” Where do authors go when characters interrupt their stories? An author can transform a string of words into the finest gossamer web, the most shimmering, delicate thing in the world, but there will always be a tired spider (with eight eyes) slumped in the corner. The door of a book is left ajar; the life of the author, of the artist is performed in a glass house, sleeping under glass sheets, their histories rendered available.

The common assumption might be that a life lived produces biography by default, just as an act produces consequences. We propose to complicate such a premise. By inviting contributors to bring and expand “Another” alongside themselves, we will pursue an intuition that the biographical project may itself produce and determine the existence and approaches of the chronicler. We will use the structure of a symposium to indulge in the fluctuating proximities between two or more authors, when two or more such subjectivities converge in a particular, specific moment of research or a work. A domestic or semi-private setting will be formed within the Piet Zwart Institute in which to consider the construction of the role of an artist in relation to Another, whether that other is a human, building or second imaginary self. The Life of an Artist symposium sets out to map the alternating levels in these dialogues of inscription and dedication through lectures, performances and screenings.

Piet Zwart Institute's Master Media Design and Communication: Networked programme welcomes you all to the Mock Show during the Open House on April 9 2011.

Please join us for live demos, informal performances and hardcore beta testing. During Piet Zwart Institute's Open House, we will host a number of projects, ranging from experimental plotter printing to narrative dérives, pre-Web 2.0 social networking, feats of scrape-technology virtuosity and various subtle – and not so subtle – acts of re-mediation.

During the Mock Show, Birgit Bachler (AT), Özalp Eröz (TR), Megan Hoogenboom (NL), Albert Jongstra (NL), Darija Medic (RS) and Renée Olde Monnikhof(NL) will show prototypal projects in preparation for their graduation show this forthcoming July.

Next to these activities, Rotterdam's own Worm.Shop and PrintRoom will be on site to talk about their activities and promote some of their unique printed and audiomedia.

Last but not least, bring your appetite, as our temporary autonomous soup kitchen will be open and we will be having a bake sale.

On Saturday January 26, 2008 between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. WdKA is inviting you to its second Open Day of this academic year.

During the first Open Day of November 2007, no fewer than 2037 visitors came to have a look at WdKA. They were able to meet both staff and students of the various Bachelor and  Master courses, including the BA Leisure Management, that has been added to WdKA's curriculum in September 2007. Thus, visitors were able to learn more about the contents of the various courses and the educational strategies at WdKA.

'Take your portfolio to the Open Day'. That has been the slogan of the publicity campaign for the November 2007 Open Day. A good 103 students responded by bringing their portfolios and presenting it to WdKA staff to get a personal advice. Thus they could improve their portfolio to have better chances on admission.

For those of you that have missed the November 2007 Open Day, WdKA is offering a second chance. On Saturday January 26, 2008 we shall open our doors between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. We hope that on that occasion we may be welcoming you as well. Full information on the day's program is to be published shortly on this site.
