Hereby the Master of Education in Arts cordially invites you to take part in the workshop and film screening UMAD decolonizing rituals. In this workshop, featuring the performance artist Fazle Shairmahomed and teacher and researcher Rolando Vázquez, you will be invited to engage in a conversation around the question: where do political and spiritual processes of decolonization intertwine? This question will be explored through a writing ritual, viewing the short film UMAD and spoken word. The workshop requires light reading and preparation of a simple ritual before participation.

In the film UMAD (Hindi: emotional overflow) you witness the spiritual journey of decolonization for four artists with roots in Surinam, India and the Netherlands. They negotiate with the history of forced labour migration, the erasure of cultures they belong to, cultures they have come to belong to, and the oppressive systems which continue to exist today. All of them have been touched by the Dutch and British colonial projects, but are shaped differently through their personal experiences in life through religion, gender, and sexuality, which becomes visible through their authentic visions on decolonization and healing

Fazle Shairmahomed is a performance artist, dancer, intersectional activist, and community builder. He creates decolonizing rituals, through which he transforms the relationship with the spectator, and challenges understandings of inter-sensoriality. His experienced reality creates an urgency that shapes his artistic choices leading to themes such as death, rebirth, ancestry, belonging, colonial histories, and healing. As a community builder he is one of the members of CLOUD danslab, an artist-run dance studio which supports research and practice of dance, movement, and performance art in the Hague; Masala Movement, an international intercultural platform for creativity; and he is involved in several Queer communities. He graduated in anthropology and Middle Eastern Studies/Arabic. www.fazleshairmahomed.com

Rolando Vázquez is a teacher and decolonial thinker. He is regularly invited to deliver keynotes on decoloniality at academic and cultural institutions. Vázquez is currently Associate Professor of Sociology at University College Roosevelt and Cluster Chair at the University College Utrecht. Since 2010, he co-directs with Walter Mignolo the annual Maria Lugones Decolonial Summer School, now hosted by the Van Abbemuseum. In 2016, under the direction of Gloria Wekker, he co-authored the report “Let’s do Diversity” of the University of Amsterdam Diversity Commission. Vázquez’s work places the question of the possibility of an ethical life at the core of decolonial thought and advocates for the decolonial transformation of cultural and educational institutions. His most recent publication is Vistas of Modernity: Decolonial aesthesis and the End of the Contemporary (Mondriaan Fund 2020)

What shapes the daily routine of a telemarketing sales agent? How to go beyond the co-working model when it comes to organize a place for collaboration? What’s the territorial and political role of furniture within the semi-domestic area of the artist’s studio? Are life hacks a form of liberation or yet another burden? Together with author and designer François Girard-Meunier, the WORKNOT! collective (Arvand Pourabbasi and Golnar Abbasi), Varia, the Centre for Everyday Technology (represented by Roel Roscam Abbing, Manetta Berends and Niek Hilkmann) and XPUB (the Experimental Publishing program of the Piet Zwart Institute), we will tackle these and more questions during an evening dedicated to spaces that are at once entrepreneurial and precarious.

Life Hacks is part of Het Nieuwe Instituut’s fellowship program around the theme of ‘burn out’. As 2017 fellow Ramon Amaro states, “on the one hand, to ‘burn out’ is to stall, break, or become otherwise unusable. In other words, processes, procedure and participation simply stop working. On the other hand, ‘burn out’ is an opportunity to break open, promote action and catalyse change towards new structures and relations.” Life Hacks manifests in a series of gatherings that respond to this ambivalence by exploring the approaches and techniques adopted to design or redesign life against the backdrop of growing precarity and an intensified entrepreneurial regime. Together with theorists, practitioners and XPUB, the Experimental Publishing program of the Piet Zwart Institute, Life Hacks looks into the tensions and releases that emerge from the constant reinvention and progressive self-optimization necessary to inhabit public and private space, manage time and productivity, and tweak one’s own thoughts and feelings.

Life Hacks is curated by Silvio Lorusso, and jointly organized by HNI’s Research Department and XPUB.

Roel Roscam Abbing (NL) is an artist and researcher whose work engages with the issues and cultures surrounding networked computation. He engages with themes such as network infrastructures, the politics of technology and do-it-yourself approaches. He holds an MA Networked Media from the Piet Zwart Institute in Rotterdam and a Fine Arts BA from the Willem De Kooning Academy. Currently he also works as a teacher in Digital Media at the department of Graphic Design in Artez, Arnhem. He is also a member of the homebrewserver.club and Varia. https://roelof.info

Manetta Berends (NL) is a graphic designer with an interest in networked publishing & free software. Her practice is rooted in practical investigations into the sociality of software related to publishing infrastructures. François Girard-Meunier (CA/NL) is interested by the performativity and politics of labour in the contemporary western post-fordist context. Graduated from the Graphic Design department of the Gerrit Rietveld Academie (2015) and the Critical Studies department of the Sandberg Instituut (2018), he works mainly in the cultural field as a designer, web developer, writer and so on. Recent projects include Flexible Bodies (2017), at the Tallinn Photomonth 17, and Talent at Work (2017), in collaboration with Mirjam Reili and re-published in the context of Signals From The Periphery (EE). Niek Hilkmann (NL) is an artist with a background in media design, art history and musicology. After graduating from the Piet Zwart Institute in Rotterdam, he started collaborating with various institutes, designers and artists on the fringe of speculative design, science fiction, media archeology and extratonal music. Besides being the curator of events such as “Floppy Totaal” and “De Grote Hoop”, he is also one of the core members of Varia, the conductor of an amateur avant-garde orchestra, the editor of the UNI Graphical Notation System, a part-time dodologist and the creator of one of the first moving panoramas since the nineteenth century. https://niekhilkmann.nl/

Varia (NL) is a Rotterdam based initiative focused on working with, on and through everyday technology. WORKNOT! (NL/IR) is a Rotterdam-based independent open collective that works to create a platform for the representation of the life and work of today’s cognitarians. It works with seemingly banal, yet extreme (and political) conditions that shape our today’s contemporary forms of living and working. The collective consists of Arvand Pourabbasi and Golnar Abbasi, researchers/designers/makers with a background in architecture and art. Since its foundation in Tehran (2012), it has worked in a variety of context through a broad range of collaborations, and has created workshops, exhibitions, performances, images, writings, lectures and publications. https://worknot.info/

The Master of Interior Architecture: Research + Design  is pleased to announce a new lecture for its 2018 public programme.

Shumi Bose is a teacher, curator and editor based in London. She is Senior Lecturer and Coordinator of Contextual Studies in Architecture at Central Saint Martins in London. She is also a curator of exhibitions at the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA). In 2017, Shumi curated Pablo Bronstein: Conservatism, or The Long Reign of Pseudo Georgian Architecture at the RIBA. With Finn Williams and Jack Self, she also co-curated Home Economics, for the British Pavilion at the 2016 Venice Biennale of Architecture. Recent publications (as editor) include Four Walls and A Roof: The Complex Nature of a Simple Profession (with Reinier de Graaf; Harvard University Press, 2017), Home Economics (The Spaces, 2016), and Wherever You Find People: the Radical Schools of Oscar Niemeyer, Leonel Brizola and Darcy Ribeiro (with Aberrant Architecture; Park Books, 2016).

The Master of Interior Architecture: Research + Design is pleased to announce a new lecture for its 2018 public programme.

Federico Martelli is a researcher and exhibition designer at AMO/OMA in Rotterdam, where he led the design of Elements of Architecture at the 2014 Venice Architecture Biennale, and more recently of Stedelijk BASE, a new gallery housing the Stedelijk Museum’s permanent collection.

He has also been working with Wolfgang Tillmans on several exhibitions, including his 2017 solo show at Tate Modern. Martelli is cofounder of Cookies – a Rotterdam-based collective that explores the relation between art, curation and architecture.

Master Fine Art presents Irene Kopelman (born 1974), an artist who holds a Doctorate of Fine Arts from the Finnish Academy of Fine Arts, Helsinki/MaHKU, Utrecht Graduate School of Visual Art and Design, Utrecht. Originally from Argentina, Kopelman moved to the Netherlands in 2002 to participate in a residency at the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten, Amsterdam. The Master Education in Arts cordially invites you for a lecture by Elizabeth Graham and Amal Khalaf.

You are already in it

Through a series of collective exercises and readings, we will discuss listening as a pedagogical space for collectivity, reciprocity and care. Sharing research developed from The Centre for Possible Studies and our current Serpentine Projects we will reflect on practices of listening, mapping, archiving and collective action. How do we move beyond the subject/object dynamic of social practice? Fred Moten says that ‘you are already in it’, you are already in the thing that you call for and that calls for you. What does it mean to work in socio-political context and how can community practice within arts institutions be a practice of solidarity?

* For the participants: Please bring a sound to share that responds to the question: what is the sound of solidarity? Recordings should last between 1 – 2 minutes.

Elizabeth Graham

Elizabeth Graham studied Fine Art at Chelsea College of Art and Design, graduating in 2009. She is a curator and educator based between London and Amsterdam. She is currently Assistant Projects Curator at the Serpentine Galleries, connecting artists, communities, self-organised groups and campaigns through long term residency programmes in the city. Alongside her role at Serpentine, Elizabeth also curates a range of public art commissions for UP Projects, including Constellations a working group at Flat Time House that supports artists to develop their practice by exploring socio-political contexts as the site for artistic practice. Prior to this, Elizabeth has worked at a variety of arts organisations including; Arnolfini (Exhibitions; John Akomfrah, Moving Targets), Tate Britain and Modern (Learning/ Artist-in-Residence Programme) and as an education researcher for the South London Gallery (ongoing). Since 2014, Elizabeth has been a tutor of Self-Directed Research on the Master Education in Arts, Piet Zwart Institute, Rotterdam, and co-organises How To Show Up? an ongoing writing and performance series at Sans Serrife, Amsterdam.

Amal Khalaf

Amal Khalaf is an artist, researcher and currently Projects Curator at the Serpentine Galleries, working on the Edgware Road Project since its inception in 2009. In addition she is the Commissioning Editor of Projects for Ibraaz, and a founding member of artist collective GCC.  Previously she has worked at Gasworks, London and the Townhouse gallery, Cairo as well as co-directing the 10th edition of the Global Art Forum, Art Dubai in 2016.  Amal’s work has been presented at the University of Pennsylvania; Goldsmiths College, London; MoMA PS1, NY; New Museum, NY; Whitney Museum of American Art, NY; Mathaf: Arab Museum of Modern Art, Doha; Musee D’Art Moderne, Paris; The Sharjah Art Foundation, Sharjah; Serralves, Porto;  amongst others in educational and cultural contexts.

The Master Education in Arts cordially invites you for a lecture by Anna Santamouro, course tutor of the seminar Making Things Public.

The field of socially and politically engaged art practices and their implications outside the artistic and institutional realm have been widely researched and discussed in the last decade. This lecture seeks to redefine such collective processes through the lens of the theories of micropolitics associated primarily with Félix Guattari and the cultural theorist Suely Rolnik. By drawing a genealogy of micropolitics and of the political and philosophical debates that have been accompanying this concept since the 1960s in Europe in the lecture I look at micropolitics through the lens of post-Operatist Italian theorists, in particular Antonio Negri, Franco ‘Bifo’ Berardi and Maurizio Lazzarato, who have incorporated this notion as a conceptual and operative tool in their work. Micropolitics here provides a productive framework to conceptualize the proliferation of artistic and curatorial collective forms of intervention in the social and political field as well as their organisational dimension and possibility to function as constituent practices, considering in particular the Southern European and Mediterranean context and the austerity climate in which they emerge.

Anna Santomauro is Programme Curator at Arts Catalyst, an arts organisation based in London. She is also the Co-founder and Chief Curator of Vessel in Bari, Italy, a non-profit arts organisation that develops public programmes and alternative education projects to address contemporary social, political, and economic issues. Based in Birmingham for the last few years, Anna recently worked for Eastside Projects and is curator-in-residence at Grand Union. She is a part-time PhD candidate at the University of Wolverhampton.

The Master of Education in Arts warmly welcomes you to the symposium Agents in the Anthropocene: Trans/disciplinary Practices in Art and Design Education Today, which takes place at January 27–28, 2017. With this symposium we intend to explore the role of the art and design fields as active agents within the discourse about the so-called ‘Anthropocene’. Special focus will be given to the notion of trans-disciplinary research —with its cross-pollination of art, science, design, media, ecology and different cultural disciplines—arising as part of the (critical) discussion about the Anthropocene.

Confirmed speakers include: T.J. Demos (Professor History of Art and Visual Culture, UCLA, Santa Cruz; founding Director of the Center for Creative Ecologies); Alistair Fuad-Luke (educator, writer, activist, and Professor of Design Research at the Faculty of Design and Art, Free University of Bozen-Bolzano) Frauke Huber & Uwe H. Martin (artists, part of the collaborative art and research project World of Matter); the artists Joshua Portway & Lise Autogena and many others. In addition to keynote presentations and brainstorm sessions, the symposium includes a selection of eleven international Open Call Presentations of exemplary practices and research from students, tutors, artists, researchers, designers, scientists and collectives.

The Anthropocene is both a widely acknowledged and fiercely debated term for a new geological era caused by humankind’s destructive influence on the planet. A growing number of exhibitions and publications are studying the intersection of the so-called Anthropocene with artistic and cultural practices. Often they advocate for modes of trans-disciplinary research that incorporate visual, cultural, artistic, technological, architectural, ecological and political categories. There seems to be an urge for a new kind of aesthetics for narrating the contemporary global reality—whether measured by a scientist or framed by an artist, or collaboratively developed by both of them. This collaborative narration transforms separate creative disciplines into a new multi-disciplinary field, whose future appearance remains speculative.

Is there an urge for ‘new mental equipment’ that will allow us to imagine the Human-Nature partnership differently? There is certainly growing engagement and activism among artists and designers—a motivation to work together as collectives within cooperative projects, laboratory research settings and the like. What can we learn from these new modes of operation and trans-disciplinary research? How are artists and designers able to act? How do we educate them in the face of the ‘Anthropocene’? What repercussions might these kinds of discussions even have for secondary art education? Or, how do we imagine the future of the environmental humanities?

In only two years, the “alt-right” rose from an Internet subculture to the force that lead Donald Trump’s campaign team and which now includes his presidential chief strategist. Its origins lie in popular visual culture, including image memes and a backlash against feminist computer game critique. Through irony and ambiguity, alt-right visuals and slang leave the movement’s relation to fascism and antisemitism deliberately open.

This lecture will delve deep into alt-right subculture, languages and networks, its relation to such Internet cultural phenomena as the Anonymous movement and its indebtedness to European political and cultural theorists.
